MURRAY, Ky. 鈥� Award-winning historian Dr. Ricardo Herrera will speak in Faculty Hall Room 208 on the campus of 麻豆视频官网入口 at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5.

Herrera鈥檚 talk, which is sponsored by the 麻豆视频官网入口 History Department, is based on his book 鈥淔eeding Washington鈥檚 Army: Surviving the Valley Forge Winter of 1778.鈥� The University of North Carolina Press published the book in 2022.

Herrera holds a doctoral degree in history from Marquette University, and he presently serves as a visiting professor in the Department of National Security and Strategy at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

In 鈥淔eeding Washington鈥檚 Army,鈥� Herrera challenges the traditional view that the American army desperately hunkered down at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, and barely survived the harsh winter of 1778.  Although the army did suffer, it maintained itself by aggressively foraging for food and supplies on excursions that sometimes took squadrons of soldiers and officers far from their base at Valley Forge. The success of these foraging parties kept the army from dissolving and enabled it to march out of Valley Forge to meet the British army in the 1778 spring and summer campaign.

Herrera has revised much of what historians believe about the American army at Valley Forge. His talk is free and open to the public.
